Device Password and Password Recovery

Updated today

"Device Password" is the password that enables you to unlock the Ambire Wallet extension. It is stored on your local device and must be unique and at least 8 characters long. Make sure it isn't anything easy to guess!

In this article, you will learn how to set up a Device Password, and how to enable Password Recovery in case you forget it. It will also show you how to change your Device Password.

If you forgot your Device Password and want to recover it, check this tutorial.

Setting up a Device Password

The Device Password is not mandatory when using the Ambire Wallet extension with "View-only" account(s) or adding an account(s) from a hardware wallet because you are not importing the signer keys for those types of accounts.

However, you can set a Device Password even in such cases. Just open the "Settings" -> "Device Password" menu and create a password for your Ambire Wallet extension.

When setting up an account (importing an existing one or creating a new one) with a Seed Phrase or Private Key, creating a Device Password is a mandatory step.

You will be prompted to create a Device Password before entering the Seed Phrase or Private Key. With such accounts, you will be able to sign transactions and messages as soon as your Ambire Wallet extension is unlocked.

Changing the Device Password

Once the Device Password is enabled, you can change it from "Settings" -> "Device Password".

Password Recovery

You can opt-in for email-based Device Password recovery for your Ambire Wallet extension. The recovery procedure is only for the device, not for any accounts inside the extension. Recovery is locally enabled and does not upload your password, any key(s), or sensitive information.

To turn it on, open the "Settings" -> "Password Recovery"

Please note: Password Recovery works for the specific installation of the extension on which it is enabled. It is completely independent of the enabled Password Recovery on other installations of the extension, whether on the same or different devices.

You can also use the same email to enable Password Recovery on different extension installations, and the feature will continue to work independently for each of them.
